A century of Service

A century of service

For more than one hundred years the “DYAL” has been an  part of the history of the pacific North West. It is the oldest continually registered wooden power in Canada. The 28 1/2 foot coastal cruiser was built to the highest standards for The Canadian Forest Service by Cornish & Commax in 1910 it remained in service until the late 1970’s.

The Dyal served with distinction through two world wars, patrolling more that 25,000 kilometers of rugged coastline in every kind of weather. Everywhere I went on the Canadian coast the Dyal  was recognized and someone wanted to tell me a tale of daring-do in the old days. For generations of coastal Canadians The Dyal is an iconic national treasure.

The Dyal had only one other owner until I bought it a few years ago. That owner commissioned a complete overhaul in 1986 and structural upgrade in 1990. Later he installed a Sea-Panther 1600cc four cylinder diesel engine. The new engine has less the 400 hours and very economically allows for a comfortably cruising speed of 9 knots.  He made the boat his home part of each year for over 30 years, in the process making it a very comfortable live-a-board with berth, galley, stove and head on a 10 amp system.

One of my chief reasons for buying this boat was that Canadian immigration laws grant boat owners the same statues as home owners. This means that the owner of this boat can enter Canada and stay for up to 6 months, than you only have to leave for the weekend. The Lower Sunshine Coast is a 40 minute ferry ride out of Horseshoe Bay, Vancouver BC, and is approximately 4 hours from Seattle Washington. and return for an additional 6 months. It seemed to me like a tremendous bonus, almost like getting a secondary citizenship to a very stable county.

The Dyal home berth is on the sunshine coast, one of the most desirable, prestigious and breathtakingly beautiful location on earth. The sunshine coast is a postcard pretty maze of secluded coves, crystal-clear bays, emerald islands, pristine forests and awe-inspiring mountain vistas. Locals boast 14 more days of sunshine per year than HAWAII, with approximately 270 growing days per year.

Truly a recreational paradise the Sunshine Coast offers a wide range of activities from sea kayaking, sailing, mountain biking, hiking, scuba diving, fresh and saltwater fishing, beachcombing, air tours, and boat tours to such glorious destinations as the Powell Forest Canoe Route, Sunshine Coast Trail, Skookumchuck Rapids or Princess Louisa Inlet - all without the crowds. This region is arguably one of the best light tackle salmon fishing destinations in the world. The season never ends; it just gets better at certain times. Not a fisherman? Prawns, crabs, oysters, clams and other shellfish can be harvested recreationally year-round. I think you could look the world over and not find a better place for a second home base.
In addition to the Dyal’s documented historical significance, obvious design, craftsmanship and superior durability traits, witnessed to by over a hundred years of  utterly dependable performance, my research indicates that a complete restoration of this grand old ship would result in more than doubling the investment involve. Not to mention the prestige of owning an iconic, historic and beautiful ship in an idyllic location.

So anyway, in this economy I’m forced to let the Dyal go for a few thousand less than paid for her. It’s not that the Dyal is a big drain on my budget. Her berthing costs in this beautiful spot are insanely inexpensive, only $160.00 a month for slip fees or $100.00 dry dock and less in private storage.

No matter what, like the two owners of the Dyal that came before me, I feel that she was one of the best investments in my life { and I’ve had a few medium juicy ones} . I owned the Dyal only three seasons but I never once stood at her helm and did not feel the history. Every time I took her out I felt a little like Humphrey Bogart in the African Queen or Jack London’s Sea Wolf. I never anchored up in a secluded cove that I did not feel wonderfully blessed to be in beautiful part of the world.
The Dyal has been an absolute joy to own and operate and I feel privileged to have been a small part of her history.
